Nueva Vizcaya used to be a large province until the creation of Isabela province. The northern towns where ceded to the newly created province so the churches in it share similarity with Nueva Vizcaya’s brick churches.
1. Saint Jerome Parish
The original church brick church of Bagabag was already destroyed but the ruins of bell tower is still present. You can see brick staircase that once part of convent. It is located at the back of municipal hall.
Though the church of Solano was under renovation when I got
there, you can still visit the shrine of Black Nazarene within the bell tower.
The first mass in Bayombong was held in 1739 and the church was initially dedicated
to Saint Augustine. After five months, the Augustinians ceded the mission to
the Dominicans and re-dedicated the church to Saint Dominic de Guzman. Since
then, they built the church in bricks, added the bell tower, convent and
cemetery nearby. As seen in the façade, it has similarity with churches in Gamu,
Cauayan City and Alicia because they were former towns of Nueva Vizcaya.
The main church of Bambang has similarity with Bayombong’s. Inner brick walls can be
seen over newly-painted altar.
The modern façade church of Aritao sits next to the municipal hall.
Few kilometers away from Aritao lies the
heritage town of Dupax Del Sur. It has the best-preserved church where its
façade served as the main model of all Nueva Vizcayan churches built in 1773.
This brick church has its interior remained intact such as the two main pillars
of the main aisle, carved with intricate pattern. Hence, it is registered as a National Cultural Treasure.
